Commitment

1

The size of the bonito

In spring, young 2-3kg first-catch bonito; in autumn, richly fatty 4-5kg returning bonito, carefully selected by season.

2

Raw bonito from Kochi

Most Kochi bonito is pole-and-line caught, leaving it beautiful and undamaged. We ship our select bonito direct from the port.

3

Straw from Shiga

We use straw hand-cut ourselves from vast contracted fields in Shiga. Dried straw burns hot with the finest smoky aroma.

4

The grilling

Over straw flames reaching 1000 degrees, we sear a crust about 5mm into the flesh, then finish with residual heat to lock in flavor.

5

The thickness of the cut

Cut over 1cm thick so the straw aroma fills your mouth, brimming with bonito flavor and a springy texture.

6

Our chosen salt

A fully sun-dried salt handmade by artisans from Kochi seawater. We select larger crystals for a mellow mineral taste.

Service

01

Robata & Warayaki

Bonito from Kochi and Omi beef from Shiga, grilled over straw right before you. Seasonal fish and vegetables draw out their fullest flavor over charcoal.

02

Sake & Local Brews

03

Seafood & Sashimi

Fresh fish shipped straight from the port, finished into sashimi by skilled hands. Enjoy the seafood of Moriyama in seasonal plates such as our five-kind sashimi platter.

04

Omi Beef & Omi Chicken

Shiga's specialty Omi beef, straw-grilled or miso-marinated, and overnight-dried Omi chicken. Enjoy Shiga's premium ingredients dynamically over charcoal in Moriyama.

05

Private Rooms & Banquets

Fully private tatami rooms for 2–20 guests, banquet courses with free-flow drinks, and full-venue bookings for 30–40. Steps from Moriyama Station — ideal for company parties and gatherings.

How to enjoy Robata

Robata Story

01

Watch the fire from the ground floor counter

The straw grilling happens on the ground floor. From the counter the flames are close at hand, and the crackle of burning straw carries to the table and terrace seats.

02

One slice, the moment it arrives

Take it plain first. The contrast between the smoke-wrapped surface and the moist flesh left inside is the first thing worth noticing.

03

A second pass with condiments, salt and citrus

Change direction halfway through the plate. Rock salt and citrus lighten the finish on straw-grilled Omi beef and on richly fatty bonito alike.

04

Upstairs on the tatami, take your time with sake

Upstairs there are three fully enclosed tatami rooms with walls and doors, each seating seven to ten guests. Out of view, you can linger over Shiga sake from dry to sweet.

Create a Special Day at Moriyama Family Izakaya

Hospitality that colors irreplaceable moments at a Moriyama Family Izakaya

Are you looking for an ideal place in Moriyama that can be used for various occasions, such as dining with your beloved family, important company entertainment, or a long-awaited get-together with friends? Many people likely find it difficult to balance an atmosphere where families can relax and enjoy themselves, with high-quality cuisine and hospitality that can create a special day. In typical izakayas, it can often be too noisy to enjoy family conversations, or on the other hand, upscale restaurants might feel too stiff in terms of budget and atmosphere. This is especially true for families with small children, where concerns about being considerate of others and the variety of food options are paramount.

Furthermore, for anniversaries or business entertainment, there's an even greater pressure to not make a mistake. Everyone wants to create a memorable day that genuinely delights their guests. However, without concrete information on what kind of restaurant to choose or what plans are available, it's easy to feel lost in the decision-making process. Therefore, we propose the unique appeal of our izakaya in Moriyama, capable of meeting every need from family gatherings to business entertainment and anniversaries, along with specific ways to use our services, so that everyone in Moriyama can relax and fully enjoy their special time.

A Multi-Purpose Space Only Achievable at a Moriyama Family Izakaya

As a Moriyama Family Izakaya, we place particular emphasis on creating a comfortable space for a wide range of customers. We offer various types of seating to provide the optimal environment for each occasion, whether it's for families with children, corporate entertainment, or anniversaries with loved ones.

  • Private Time in a Fully Private Room: For those who wish to enjoy conversation at leisure without worrying about their surroundings, we offer a variety of fully private rooms, large and small. Even with small children, you can dine comfortably without bothering other guests. We also have children's chairs and tableware available, so please feel free to request them when making a reservation. These rooms are perfect for family anniversaries and birthday parties, as well as for entertaining important business partners.
  • Semi-Private Rooms for Both Vibrancy and Calm: Semi-private seating is recommended for those who want to enjoy a lively atmosphere while also maintaining a moderate level of privacy. These are ideal for casual Moriyama get-togethers with close friends or slightly informal meals. The space is divided by partitions, allowing you to concentrate on your conversation without direct disturbance from the surrounding hustle and bustle.
  • Spacious Table Seating for a Lively Experience: For those who prefer to dine in a vibrant atmosphere, we also have spacious table seating. This is perfect for casual gatherings with friends or informal meals. While it's an open space, the tables are generously spaced, ensuring you can relax without feeling cramped.

All our seats are arranged with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that our guests can fully enjoy their meals and conversations. Especially for customers with small children, we can accommodate requests such as special arrangements to keep children entertained and allergy responses, so please feel free to consult us in advance.

How to Choose a Private Room for Various Occasions

To help you select the ideal private room for your purpose, please consider the following points when making a reservation:

  1. Clarify the number of people and purpose: Please inform us of the number of guests and the purpose of your meal (e.g., family birthday, business entertainment, formal meeting). We will suggest a private room with the optimal size and atmosphere.
  2. Special requests: If you have any special requests, such as children's chairs, allergy accommodations, or surprise arrangements (e.g., bringing in a cake, message plate), please do not hesitate to let us know. We will do our best to accommodate them.
  3. Desired ambiance: If you have preferences for the room's atmosphere, such as a calm Japanese-style space or a bright room, we will guide you accordingly.

Maximizing Enjoyment of Seasonal Seafood

Seasonal seafood offers unique flavors that can only be experienced during specific times of the year. We provide the highest quality seafood based on daily procurement.

  1. Spring Delights: Fish like cherry sea bream (Sakuradai) and early bonito (Hatsugatsuo), plump and firm, adorn the table. Enjoy them as refreshing sashimi or fragrant grilled dishes.
  2. Summer Bounty: Rich and invigorating seafood such as rock oysters (Iwagaki), pike conger (Hamo), and horse mackerel (Aji) are abundant, helping to ward off summer fatigue. They pair perfectly with chilled sake, offering a cooling dish.
  3. Autumn Harvest: The rich flavors of autumn, including returning bonito (Modorigatsuo), Pacific saury (Sanma), and salmon (Sake), are truly appetizing. Enjoy the full umami of these ingredients in salt-grilled or simmered dishes.
  4. Winter Delights: Winter seafood such as yellowtail (Kanburi), snow crab (Zuwaigani), and monkfish (Anko), firm-bodied and rich in fat, are truly exquisite. Savor warming dishes like hot pots and rich steamed preparations.

We always welcome our guests with the finest ingredients and cooking methods, so you can experience the changing seasons through our cuisine.

Moriyama Robatayaki - The Essence of Umeda-cho Izakaya - Paired with Local Sake

Among the Umeda-cho Izakaya establishments, our Moriyama Robatayaki is particularly well-received. Fresh ingredients slowly grilled right before your eyes stimulate all five senses and further whet your appetite. Perfectly paired with this Robatayaki is local sake nurtured by Shiga's rich nature, specifically Moriyama Sake.

  • Boldly Grilling Carefully Selected Ingredients over Charcoal: Our skilled chefs meticulously grill fresh local vegetables from contract farms, seafood freshly sourced that day, and carefully selected meats over charcoal. The far-infrared effect unique to charcoal grilling locks in the ingredients' umami, resulting in a fragrant exterior and a plump, juicy interior. Large scallops, jumbo shrimp, and seasonal vegetables, in particular, offer exceptional flavors that can only be fully appreciated through robatayaki.
  • Blissful Marriage with Moriyama Sake: Shiga Prefecture, blessed with Lake Biwa's bounty and high-quality water, is a renowned region for sake brewing. We always stock over ten types of Moriyama Sake, carefully selected from local breweries. From dry to sweet, Junmai Ginjo to Daiginjo, we will suggest the perfect bottle to match your preferences and complement your robatayaki dishes. The combination of piping hot robatayaki and crisp, chilled sake creates truly blissful moments.
  • Seasonal Robatayaki Menu: Seasonal ingredients truly shine when prepared as robatayaki. In spring, enjoy wild vegetables; in summer, sweetfish; in autumn, matsutake mushrooms and Pacific saury; and in winter, crab and oysters. You can savor a variety of seasonal delicacies grilled on our robata. We collaborate with local fishing ports and farmers to always procure the finest ingredients.

From the counter seats, you can observe our chefs facing the charcoal grill and experience the savory aroma of ingredients being cooked up close. This is the true essence of robatayaki. As a Moriyama Family Izakaya, we also offer gently seasoned robatayaki dishes that even children can enjoy with peace of mind.

How to Enjoy Choosing Sake

Sake is profound, and the taste of your meal can change significantly depending on your choice. Our staff will guide you carefully, ensuring even beginners can enjoy the experience.

  1. Start by telling us your preferences: If you give us a general idea, such as whether you prefer dry or sweet, or a fruity aroma, we can recommend the most suitable brand.
  2. Enjoy pairing with food: We can also suggest pairings based on the food, such as a crisp, dry Junmai Ginjo for robatayaki seafood, or a rich Junmai-shu for meat dishes.
  3. Discover new favorites with a tasting: We offer a sake tasting set where you can compare small portions. Trying various Moriyama Sake to find your favorite is also an enjoyable experience.

To make your Moriyama get-together even more special, please try pairing your meal with sake.
